Random Movie Review: The Beaver (2011)

by Jim Kopetz

Mel Gibson gets a beaver. Maybe in real life, Mel Gibson should get a beaver.

The Beaver is a dark, brutal revelation. It speaks to our inner despair, pain, and self-loathing. It challenges us to overcome. Mel Gibson plays the lead, Walter Black, to perfection. He operates 'The Beaver' with a natural precision, as his real-life quarrels are spun through the mouth of a puppet.

There are moments of levity, punctuated with notes of sadness. Every beautiful creation has extreme pain behind it, whether it's Walter's 'Mr. Beaver Woodworking Set' or Norah's beautiful graffiti. Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence deserve equal accolades. The relationship that develops between them is difficult, and filled with existential agony. But they overcome. That is the core theme. Overcome our self-imposed obstacles. Overcome our genetics. Overcome our pain. Not through pills, or 'Chicken Soup'. Not even through a puppet.
