It is morally irresponsible for Newt Gingrich to begin charging $50 for photograph.
This latest political gaffe is a last-ditch effort by a hopelessly indebted campaign to begin raising funds that will "hopefully" sustain its futile efforts for a few more months. But it's not smart business, nor is it intelligent advertising, it's manipulation and exploitation by a candidate who will never become president; it's akin to price gouging, and it will ruin his reputation and public image.
It's a pathetic maneuver to erase the $1.6 million debt his campaign is currently operating under, all the while stealing money from those who he is so quick to call "loyal supporters." The majority of professional athletes don't charge for pictures, and very few charge for autographs. While I can understand Gingrich charging $50 for some memorabilia from his campaign, e.g. drafts of his future concession speech, but not $50 for a picture with a child.
How can you make parents fork over "credit card information" prior to taking a picture with their cancer-stricken toddler?
Are you serious, Newt? You have done some slimy and questionable things in the past, but this is inexcusable; it is a privilege to meet and greet your constituencies and would-be voters, and there is no quicker and dumber way to alienate them than for charging them to take a picture with you and essentially "view" you for years to come.
Are you going to start charging them to attend your fundraisers next or will you attempt to go door-to-door and collect "donations" from retirees who have the misfortune of viewing multiple television advertisements with your bulldog mug and muddied name on them? Call it a "donation," or call it a "contribution," but just don't call it voluntary or a comeback.
Soon Newt will be asking for a bailout
